U.S. schedules Serbia friendly for Bruce Arena's return as coach

Bruce Arena's second stint as United States coach will start with a friendly against Serbia on Jan. 29 at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium.

The match, announced on Wednesday, will air on ESPN2 and follow a training camp in Carson, California, that opens around Jan. 8.

It will be the first of two planned friendlies before World Cup qualifying resumes March 24 at home against Honduras.

Arena coached the U.S. from 1998-2006, leading the Americans to the 2002 World Cup quarterfinals. He was fired after the team's group-stage elimination in 2006.

Arena replaced Jurgen Klinsmann last month after the U.S. opened the final round of CONCACAF qualifying with a 2-1 home loss to Mexico and a 4-0 defeat at Costa Rica.

The U.S. has never faced Serbia before but lost to its predecessor, Yugoslavia, at the 1998 World Cup.

Tickets go on sale on Monday morning.
