Julian Green in United States squad ahead of friendly against Puerto Rico

United States manager Jurgen Klinsmann named his 22-man squad for a training camp this week in Miami ahead of the Copa America Centenario next month.

The team will be without striker Jozy Altidore due to a hamstring injury as well as a half-dozen foreign-based players for Sunday's friendly at Puerto Rico because of club commitments.

Altidore, who hasn't scored for Toronto FC in Major League Soccer this season, was hurt on Saturday while taking a penalty kick against Vancouver that was saved.

Klinsmann said 17-year-old midfielder Christian Pulisic will remain with Borussia Dortmund for the German Cup final on Saturday against Bayern Munich.

Defender Timmy Chandler will stay with Eintracht Frankfurt for a two-leg playoff against Nurnberg on Thursday and May 23 as his club tries to avoid relegation from the Bundesliga.

Defenders Ventura Alvarado (Club America), Edgar Castillo (Monterrey) and Omar Gonzalez (Pachuca) are remaining with their clubs for the Liga MX playoff semifinals, and backup goalkeeper Ethan Horvath will stay with Molde for Norweigan Tippeligaen matches against Odd on Monday and Brann on Saturday.

MLS players will report to the national team ahead of friendlies against Ecuador (May 25 at Frisco, Texas) and Bolivia (May 28 at Kansas City, Kansas).

U.S. Soccer must submit a 23-man Copa America roster by Friday and plans to announce it the following day.

The players must come from the 40-man preliminary squad chosen last month.

Seven players at this week's camp were not on the preliminary Copa team, including five who have not previously trained with the senior squad: goalkeeper Zach Steffen, midfielder Caleb Stanko and forwards Paul Arriola, Amando Moreno and Fabrice Picault.

"Fafa" Picault was called up for the first time after scoring four goals since March for St. Pauli in the German second division.

Moreno recently made his first two starts in Liga MX for Club Tijuana alongside Arriola.

The other two are midfielder Emerson Hyndman, who a source told ESPN FC is set to leave Fulham this summer, and forward Julian Green, who scored against Belgium at the 2014 World Cup.

Green, 20, made only one senior appearance for Bayern Munich this season and has not played for the U.S. since April 2015.

These seven players are not eligible to be selected for the Copa America Centenario roster, as they were not a part of the binding 40-man preliminary list.

Klinsmann said he is using this week as a transition camp for the players in contention for the Copa team so they can continue their training.

"We are doing this week in Miami and finishing off the week with a game in Puerto Rico because it's really important in terms of transitioning our players coming in from Europe and some who are already done in Mexico to keep them in a flow, to keep them in a rhythm," said Klinsmann.

"One of our lessons from last year's Gold Cup was because the tournament was pushed into July, we couldn't transition our European-based players and some of the Mexican players perfectly.

"We added some players coming from the younger side to look at them and to get a roster together, but the main purpose of this camp is to keep the rhythm, keep going and to transition perfectly into the preparation for the Copa America Centenario."
