Bobby Wood breaks record for league goals by American in Germany

Bobby Wood scored his 15th and 16th league goals of the season for Union Berlin on Friday to set a record for an American in Germany.

The 23-year-old, in his first year with Union Berlin in the 2.Bundesliga, surpassed the previous mark set by Conor Casey, who scored 14 with Karlsruher in the 2003-04 season.

Eric Wynalda was next on the list with 12 goals for Saarbrucken in 1993-94. All three U.S. players were in the second division during those seasons.

Wood, who has earned 16 caps with the U.S., broke the record in the seventh minute at Paderborn when he cut toward the top of the box and scored with the help of a deflection.

The Hawaii native scored his second goals six minutes later on the counter-attack, controlling a long ball and holding off two defenders before beating the keeper.

Union Berlin cruised to a 4-0 win and sit seventh in the German second division.

Wood is two goals behind the league's top scorers, Bochum's Simon Terodde and Freiburg's Nils Petersen.
