Landon Donovan: Jurgen Klinsmann should be fired if U.S. doesn't win

Landon Donovan says the United States should fire Jurgen Klinsmann if the Americans fail to beat Guatemala on Tuesday night.

The U.S. faces a must-win World Cup qualifier in Columbus, Ohio, against a team that beat them 2-0 on Friday in Guatemala City.

Anything less than a victory would put the Americans in a spot from which qualification would be out of their hands.

And Donovan says that's more than enough for Klinsmann to lose his job.

"If you look at it from a business decision, you're losing out on tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars in all different ways so you'd have to say yes," Donovan said on the Dan Patrick Show, when asked if Klinsmann's job was on the line.

"If you look at it from a performance decision, if you can't beat Guatemala at home then you don't deserve to be at a World Cup and you say yes. There's your answer.

"If you can't beat Guatemala at home in a World Cup qualifier then you probably shouldn't be the coach. It's as simple as that."

Donovan, who was famously left off of Klinsmann's squad for the 2014 World Cup, also said on Soccer Morning on Sirius XM that a lack of a stable lineup has caused problems for the U.S.

"The sense I get, and I talk to a lot of the players, is that there's no confidence because there's no stability," Donovan said.

It's not the first time Donovan has called for Klinsmann's firing, as the former LA Galaxy star also wanted a change in leadership before October's Confederations Cup playoff defeat to Mexico.
