U.S.' Jordan Morris sent to Werder Bremen via Andreas Herzog referral

United States assistant coach Andreas Herzog recommended U.S. forward Jordan Morris to his old club Werder Bremen, the Austrian told Kreiszeitung.

"Our goal is to get as many players to Europe as possible," he said.

21-year-old Morris is set to join Bundesliga club Werder Bremen next week during their winter training camp in Turkey, the club confirmed on Tuesday.

The 2015 NCAA College Cup winner with Stanford announced on Twitter that his time as a Cardinal has come to an end, and he has decided to "pursue a professional soccer career."

While after spending time with the club's youth programs he is eligible to join Seattle Sounders on a homegrown deal, he first wants to explore his options in Europe.

Former Bremen midfielder and current Jurgen Klinsmann assistant Herzog said that he recommended Morris to the Bundesliga strugglers, and revealed that the trial is part of a plan to bring more United States players to Europe.

"Our goal is to bring as many players to Europe as possible," Herzog told the Bremen-based paper.

The 47-year-old, a Bundesliga champion with Werder Bremen in 1993, added that he's curious to see whether Morris can make the leap from college straight into one of the European top flights.

"The question is whether he can assert himself in a league like Germany or England," he said. "He is very fast, intelligent, has endless power, he's a brawny forward. Defenders are mostly left standing when he goes into the one-on-ones. Werder don't have a player like him. But he certainly still needs to refine his qualities."
