Fabian Johnson, Clint Dempsey among finalists for U.S. Male Player of Year

Brad Guzan and DeAndre Yedlin have been nominated as finalists for 2015 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year for the first time.

They were joined by Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley and Fabian Johnson on the shortlist, as announced by U.S. Soccer on Monday.

Dempsey, who has won the award three times, scored nine goals in as many games for the national team in 2015, seven of which came in the Gold Cup, where he was the tournament's top scorer.

He added seven goals in 13 appearances for the Seattle Sounders, but his year was tarnished by a three-game suspension for tearing a referee's notebook in a U.S. Open Cup match.

After that incident, Bradley took the captain's armband for the U.S. at the Gold Cup, where he scored twice and earned his 100th cap. He also led Toronto FC into the MLS playoffs for the first time.

Yedlin won the Young Male Player of the Year in 2014 and has secured a spot among Jurgen Klinsmann's starting lineup in the recent World Cup qualifiers. After moving to the Premier League with Tottenham in January, he moved to Sunderland on loan over the summer, where he has recently broken into the first team.

Johnson, who made 13 appearances for the U.S. in 2015, has enjoyed a remarkable run of form for his club Borussia Monchengladbach, scoring four times in the Bundesliga and twice in the Champions League this season.

Guzan spent the year as the No. 1 goalkeeper for the U.S. as Tim Howard took time away from the national team. He's had his struggles with Aston Villa, however, initially losing his spot early in the year, and the club now sit bottom of the Premier League.

The award is voted on by U.S. national team and youth team coaches and staff, players who earned a cap, MLS and NASL coaches and selected media and former U.S. players and officials.
