Timothy Chandler set to train again, but John Brooks suffers ankle set-back

United States full-back Timothy Chandler is set to resume team training at Eintracht Frankfurt next week, but his countryman and Hertha defender John Brooks has suffered another injury set-back.

This season, 25-year-old Chandler has made just two appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt following initial struggles to get into the team after his Gold Cup participation this summer.

In his second match, a 4-1 victory at Stuttgart, Frankfurt coach Armin Veh had to withdraw Chandler, who was struggling with knee problems, at half-time and the United States full-back underwent knee surgery soon after.

On Wednesday, a month after the meniscal surgery, he returned to the training pitch at Frankfurt, and later told reporters that he hopes to be back in action once Bundesliga resumes in mid-October after the upcoming international break.

"I am making progress than expected. The knee wasn't even swollen. I think that I can resume team training after our match at Ingolstadt on Saturday," Chandler said.

Elsewhere, Hertha Berlin defender John Brooks has suffered another injury set-back.

"It appears to be the ankle. It has swollen overnight," the club's coach Pal Dardai told reporters on Thursday at his pre-match news conference for the club's meeting with Hamburg.

The previous day, Dardai had been optimistic that the 22-year-old was finally on his way to full fitness following muscular problems sustained during his trip to the United States team in early September.

Hertha's Hungarian coach had hoped to keep Brooks in Berlin during the next round of internationals so the defender "can find his rhythm, which has been lacking for three months."

The club's sporting executive Michael Preetz had announced in kicker to ask United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann to not call him up to the USMNT squad to face Mexico at the crucial CONCACAF Cup on Oct. 10.

Brooks has only featured for Hertha three times this season. He is under contract in 2017, and his new agent and the capital club are currently negotiating a new deal.
