United States names 23-man squad for September friendlies

Jurgen Klinsmann named his 23-man squad for the United States' upcoming friendlies against Peru and Brazil on Sept. 4 and 8, respectively.

The friendlies are prep matches for the United States' Oct. 10 playoff clash with CONCACAF rivals Mexico at the Rose Bowl for a spot in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.

"The bigger picture is to get some answers for how we put things together for [the] Mexico game a month from now," said head coach Jurgen Klinsmann of the team list.

"Obviously we want to continue to have a good flow of guys from the Gold Cup, but also to bring back guys who are in position to compete for a spot on the roster for Oct. 10. Our message to these guys is simple: prove a point that you want to be at the Rose Bowl."

The team, which includes the return of Jozy Altidore, will feature 15 players from this summer's Gold Cup roster and 12 from the United States' 2014 World Cup squad along with just one newcomer, 25-year-old SV Sandhausen forward Andrew Wooten.

Michael Bradley, who recently opted out of the Sept. 4 friendly with Peru, and Clint Dempsey, will be added to the squad against Brazil.
