Houston Dash waive Banyana duo Thembi Kgatlana and Linda Motlhalo

The Houston Dash have waived the rights to two South African players, Thembi Kgatlana and Linda Motlhalo, the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) side announced on Tuesday.

The pair's departure means the Dash go from three Banyana Banyana players during the 2018 season to none, as veteran defender and South Africa captain Janine van Wyk has also called time on her tenure in Houston.

Kgatlana, who was recently named the CAF female player of the year, scored two goals and provided three assists in her 16 games at the Dash, while midfielder Motlhalo scored a goal and an assist in 21 appearances.

Dash head coach James Clarkson, who replaced former Banyana coach Vera Pauw at the end of the season, said in a statement: "We are grateful for everything Linda and Thembi have given the club.

"We wish them the best as they begin the next chapter of their career. We would have loved to have them join us for 2019, but we understand the complexities of the global game and the interest in players like Linda and Thembi.

"This now gives us roast flexibility, including an opening international spot as we continue to build the 2019 Houston Dash."

The decision, said to be mutual as the duo look to opportunities in other leagues, leaves the Dash with a free international roster spot, as they have Rachel Daly (England), Kyah Simon (Australia) and Clare Polkinhorne (Australia) on the books.
