KCCA defeat Vipers on penalties in Super Cup showdown

KCCA FC have defeated reigning Uganda Premier League Champions Vipers Sports Club 4-2 in a penalty shootout to win the season-opening 2018 FUFA Super Cup.

The match, played at the Mutesa II Wankulukuku Stadium, saw the two teams settle for a goalless draw after 90 minutes before KCCA FC proved sharper from the spot.

Mustafa Kizza, Hassan Musana, Bernard Muwanga and Julius Poloto converted for KCCA FC, while Vipers SC had Geoffrey Wassa and Tito Okello convert.

Aggrey Madoi and Moses Waiswa missed their spot kicks, as new Vipers coach Javier Espinosa Martinez got his tenure at the champs off to a losing start.

Striker Daniel Sserunkuma should have won the match for Vipers SC at the death, but his shot was parried out for a corner by KCCA FC stopper David Lukwago.

KCCA coach Mike Hillary Mutebi said he was happy to start the season with a win against the defending champions.

"This is a good motivation going into the new season," he told KweséESPN, "and we shall continue to work hard and prepare the players well.

"It is a great feeling to win the FUFA Super Cup," added Poloto. "We shall continue to work hard because we want to win back the league title."

New Vipers boss Martinez also took positives from his side's defeat.

"I am happy after seeing how competitive my players were in this game," he told KweséESPN. "Although we lost the game, I am confident that we have a good team that we can keep improving for the season and the CAF Champions League.

"The field of play was not very good, but the two teams played good football," he added. "The game has helped me know several things about my players in tough match situations as we plan for the season."

The Mexican took over as head coach of Vipers SC from Portuguese Miguel Da Costa who was fired despite winning the league title.
