Vipers title dream fuelled by SC Villa triumph - Da Costa

Vipers Sports Club coach Miguel Da Costa believes his team can go onto claim the Uganda Premier League title after beating rivals SC Villa on Tuesday.

In-form Dan Sserunkuma scored the only goal of the game in the title showdown to take Vipers to 46 points, three behind SC Villa who have played a game more.

Vipers have a goal difference of +15 compared to Villa's +16, but coach Da Costa believes they'll have the edge as the title race comes down to the wire.

"As a coach I am happy my title ambitions are a live and I know we have what it takes to carry the trophy when the season comes to a climax," he told KweséESPN.

"I am very proud of my players because they followed instructions and did the job," he added. "Getting three points away from home against the table leaders is very good as we prepare for the remaining seven games,"

By contrast, SC Villa coach Wasswa Bbosa was left reflecting on what might have been after his side lost their first home game of the season.

"This is the worst time to suffer defeat," he told KweséESPN. "We played well but failed to convert our chances and yet Vipers SC were clinical and took theirs.

"We need to correct our mistakes and remain focused because we have more games to play and every game will count."

In Arua, defending champions KCCA FC's hopes of retaining their title were dented when Onduparaka salvaged a 1-1 draw.

Muhammad Shaban scored against his former team to give KCCA FC the lead, before Viane Sekajugo leveled matters for the home side in the second half.

KCCA FC are now third on the log with 45 points from 23 games played.

In the other games played on Tuesday, struggling Express FC defeated UPDF FC 2-0, while Proline FC humbled Police FC 3-1.

Express FC and Proline FC and not yet safe in the battle to stay in top flight next season.

"We badly needed to win against Police FC because playing in the lower league is something we don't want to think about," coach Mujib Kasule told KweséESPN.

"My boys need to remain focused and pick up some more wins so that we remain in the Premier League next season."

On Wednesday bottom-placed Masavu FC will host Soana FC at their Fisheries Institute Stadium in Entebbe, while Mbabara City FC host Bidco FC.
