The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) have revealed that coach Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic rejected a new contract to remain with the East Africans before leaving his post last week.

The Serbian coach guided the Cranes to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations - ending their 38-year wait to return to the continental high table - but handed in a letter of resignation after accusing the Ugandan association of failing to pay his salary.

Speaking at a press conference at the FUFA headquarters in Mengo, FA President Moses Magogo has shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the 47-year-old's exit.

"We offered Sredojevic a new improved contract which was double the salary, but he rejected it," Magogo began. "I think he was determined to leave."

The FA boss also clarified that the fee owed to the departed coach is $54,000, and not the $64,000 that has been cited in the press.

"We have lost a star player," Magogo added, "but we shall get a substitute because results are normally achieved by a team and not an individual player.

"We do not have money in a bag somewhere that we just pick and make payments," he added. "It's the bad systems in Uganda that we should change.

"National teams should be managed by the government and the FA remains to develop football," he added.

Speaking to KweséESPN, Micho acknowledged that he had been offered a new contract by the Ugandan federation, but questioned how he could sign a new deal when his debts hadn't been cleared.

The Eastern European coach accused FUFA of being "good spin doctors."

The Federation also confirmed that Moses Basena and Fred Kajoba have been appointed as interim coaches for the national team ahead of the four international matches to be played in August and September.

Basena, who was previously Cranes assistant coach, also handles top flight team The Saints FC.
