Geoffrey Sserunkuma voted Uganda's best

Geoffrey Sserunkuma has been voted the 2016-17 Uganda Premier League Footballer of the Year.

The veteran striker, who netted 21 goals in the League to help KCCA FC retain the title, won top honours at Wednesday night's ceremony at the Imperial Royal Hotel in Kampala.

"I want to give glory back to God for enabling me have the kind of season I had with KCCA FC; I am really grateful for those who voted for me," the 34-year old said.

Besides the award, Sserunkuma - who signed for Zambia's Premier League side Buildcon FC last weekend - also walked away with a brand new Subaru Forester and a $550 cash reward.

Sserunkuma, who has also played in Ethiopia with St George and in South Africa with Bloemfontein Celtic, Bidvest Wits and Vasco da Gama, also grabbed the top scorer award.

He netted four times in the CAF Champions League, and twice in the Confederation Cup as KCCA FC reached the group stage.

For the national team he was part of the squad at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and last month netted the lone goal in a 2019 Afcon qualifier away to Cape Verde.

KCCA FC head coach Mike Hillary Mutebi, who guided the team not only to the League title but also the Uganda Cup trophy, was also voted Coach of the Year.

It was the KCCA FC show as their Kibuli Secondary School student Allan Okello picked up the Young Player of the Year award, while Khalid Lwaliwa (Vipers SC) was voted Best defender and Ismail Watenga (Vipers SC) Best Goalkeeper.
