Sevilla set to be without Ganso for UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid

Sevilla coach Jorge Sampaoli says Paulo Henrique Ganso is not ready to make his debut in the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid in Trondheim on Tuesday.

Ganso, 26, joined Sevilla in a €9.5 million deal from Sao Paulo this summer, as part of a complete overhaul of the squad by sporting director Monchi, as the more attack-minded Sampaoli replaced Unai Emery as coach.

The midfielder arrived at Sevilla with a hamstring problem that has not responded as well as hoped to treatment, and Sampaoli told a news conference that it was unlikely they player would be fit to face Madrid.

"When we decided to sign [Ganso], we saw a player with subtlety that you do not find in modern football," Sampaoli said. "He has had a muscle tear, and is recovering. It is difficult for him to play."

Sampaoli reportedly plans to field Ganso as a deep-lying playmaker, despite a lack of previous defensive experience. The former Chile national team coach said that the best players were able to adapt to different positions.

"There are players who play well and players who play badly," he said. "Ganso plays well, and he can play in any position. It will be about adapting to the role he is given."

Grzegorz Krychowiak, Kevin Gameiro and Ever Banega have all left Sevilla, with nine new first-team players signed. Sampaoli's teams have previously played a higher paced pressing style than Emery's sides, and he admitted it was unlikely everything would click into place at once.

"I believe the new players and the new style of play needed some time to come together," Sampaoli added. "We will see in different moments.

"When you take up an idea, it is important how you feel about it. In a crisis we will see how the idea is for each individual. I hope this change gives us a chance to take on the best teams."

The Argentine coach said he would not change his ideas to play a more patient style against Madrid on Tuesday, as the most important thing was to be brave and stick to your ideas.

"I do not like when the other team dominates the pitch, and I try to communicate a style which generates bravery and rebelliousness to go for the game," Sampaoli said. "When you play these games it is important to win, but the most important is the way of playing.

"Just winning, in any way, would confuse what we are doing. We want to take on Madrid as equals. We must rebel against our lower status."
