Ben Chilwell to replace Manchester United's injured Luke Shaw for England friendlies

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has withdrawn from the England squad because of injury and will be replaced by Ben Chilwell.

The 23-year-old completed United's 3-2 win over Newcastle at Old Trafford on Saturday despite picking up a knock.

He reported to St George's Park on Monday but after being assessed by England's medical staff was sent back to United's Carrington training base for treatment. He has been replaced by Leicester's Chilwell for the Nations League games against Croatia and Spain.

Chilwell, who won his first cap in last month's friendly win over Switzerland, had been included in the Under-21 squad.

Shaw has been Jose Mourinho's regular left-back this season starting all but two of United's games in all competitions.

Sources have ESPN FC his injury is considered minor and he should be fit to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Oct. 20.

However, Nemanja Matic could miss out on a chance to face his former team after withdrawing from Serbia's squad for their UEFA Nations League matches against Montenegro and Romania due to an unspecified injury, the Premier League club said on Tuesday.

United confirmed Matic had returned to the club to complete his rehabilitation under their guidance, making him a doubt for the match against Chelsea after the international break.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old United defender Ethan Laird has signed his first professional deal at the club. The England U18 international has followed highly-rated striker Mason Greenwood in committing his long-term future to United.
