Manchester United face missing seven players for Celta Vigo semifinal trip

Manchester United are set to head into their Europa League semifinal first leg at Celta Vigo on Thursday without seven first-team players.

Manager Jose Mourinho saw United's injury problems grow during Sunday's 1-1 home draw with Swansea as defenders Luke Shaw and Eric Bailly were forced off.

Bailly's absence means Mourinho does not have a recognised senior centre-half available, with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones also injured.

But midfielder Juan Mata was back on the bench against Swansea after missing eight games with a groin problem.

He underwent a training session on the pitch following the match, increasing his chances of a start on Thursday.

Paul Pogba is also set to return in Spain after missing the last two games but Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcos Rojo and Timothy Fosu-Mensah are out.

Marouane Fellaini is free to return while he serves a three-match domestic ban.

Ashley Young, who played at right-back and left-back against Swansea as injuries took their toll, said United were feeling the effects of having played 57 games this season.

He told MUTV: "I think there were a lot of tired legs in the second half, but there are still a lot of points to play for.

"We have to recover and we have another game to look forward to. Getting the injuries isn't ideal, but we have to keep plugging away."

Meanwhile, Celta coach Eduardo Berizzo told his players to forget Sunday's 3-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao and focus on the United game.

Berizzo made eight changes for what was a third straight home defeat in La Liga, including resting top scorer Iago Aspas.

Celta did not manage a shot on goal at the Balaidos stadium, and Marca quoted Berizzo as saying: "Each of us has to look at himself and be self-critical."

But he urged his team to rise to the occasion against United, saying he was anticipating "a thrilling game."

"We all have to go together, hand in hand, imagining about a dream result," he said.

"To be able to accomplish the dream should stimulate everyone to try to overcome a great team by giving a great effort.

"I really hope we experience a special night."

Celta have never played in a semifinal of a major European competition before, and Thursday's game at the 29,000-seat Balaidos is sold out.
