Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp: My past cup final losses don't matter against Sevilla

BASEL, Switzerland -- Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp denied that losing his past four finals will affect his thinking ahead of Wednesday's Europa League final with Sevilla.

At previous club Borussia Dortmund, Klopp lost two DFB Pokal finals as well as the 2013 Champions League final to Bayern Munich. Since joining Liverpool, he lost this season's Capital One Cup final to Manchester City on penalties.

"To be honest, before a final, I only think about performance," said the German, speaking at a prematch news conference at St Jakob's Park in Basel on Tuesday. "The only thing we have influence on is performance.

"I am not frustrated about my final record. It is what it is. When it's over, it's over. I was not happy, I have too many silver medals but it's better than winning no medals."

Klopp expressed his great faith in a squad he took over in October when succeeding the sacked Brendan Rodgers, and he paid tribute to his players and Liverpool's fans.

"There was such a big amount of doubt on these players," he said. "Now it's a big opportunity to make a final step with this team.

"We had a lot of really difficult moments but we solved them. These boys are human beings and it's not so easy be ready for everything but they are ready."

He continued: "We know about the desire of our supporters. We know how much they showed us when we played at home and away from home. It was great to see. They live all over the world. It shows everything about this club."

Should Liverpool beat two-times holders Sevilla they will automatically qualify for the group stage of next season's Champions League, but midfielder James Milner said that fact formed no part of the squad's motivation.

"I think it's a nice bonus, but I can honestly say I haven't thought about the Champions League," said Milner. "The only thing on our mind is winning this trophy. You play football to be involved in the best games and play against the biggest players.

"To win any European trophy is a massive achievement."

Milner joined Liverpool from Manchester City last summer and said he hoped that he could crown his first season on Merseyside with silverware.

"It was a tough decision to make last year," he said. "I have thoroughly enjoyed my first season. It's a massive club used to winning trophies. We've got to two cup finals. We had a losing experience and we hope we can turn that around."

Club captain Jordan Henderson said being in a European final was "everything you dream of as a boy" but admitted that he might only play a minor part on Wednesday, having only made his return to first-team action from a knee injury in Sunday's 1-1 draw at West Brom.

"The injury's been fine, last few weeks," said Henderson. "I managed to play 25-30 minutes at the weekend. I feel good. I will play as long as the boss wants me to."

Klopp suggested that Divock Origi, previously his first-choice striker before suffering an ankle injury in last month's 4-0 derby defeat of Everton, may also be able to play a part.

"Divock, we will see," said Klopp of the Belgian. "In the last two sessions, he did well. We will see how he feels."
