Augsburg's Daniel Baier could miss Liverpool clash through injury

Augsburg midfielder Daniel Baier is a doubt for the Europa League round-of-32 tie against Liverpool after being sidelined with an ankle injury.

The two sides meet in Europe this month, with Liverpool travelling to Germany on Feb. 18, before Augsburg make the trip to Anfield a week later.

The Bavarians have been in good form in recent weeks, having remained undefeated in their last seven Bundesliga matches, winning four of those while scoring eight goals and conceding only one.

However, Augsburg, currently sitting 12th in Germany's top tier, have suffered a major setback after Baier sustained an injury in last week's 0-0 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt.

"Bad news for Daniel Baier -- the FCA player has suffered a hairline fracture in his ankle, and will be out of action in the coming weeks," read a statement on Augsburg's official website.

The statement added that the 31-year-old will not have to undergo surgery, while his comeback date "is entirely dependent on the recovery process."

Baier has been a mainstay for Augsburg ever since they were promoted to the Bundesliga in 2011, having played in 152 of the club's 155 league matches.

"We've shown good performances with Daniel Baier over the years," Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl told reporters. "Now, we'll have to do without him for a number of weeks for the first time ever."

Weinzierl added: "It's depressing for him that he's out of action prior to those [Liverpool] games."
