Augsburg website crashes after Liverpool draw in Europa League

FC Augsburg's website temporarily crashed after they were drawn against Liverpool in the Europa League on Monday.

Augsburg, playing in Europe for the first time in their history, were rewarded for clinching second spot in Group L with a two-legged tie against Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool in the round of 32.

Within minutes of the draw being announced, the Bavarian club's website crashed amid the surge in traffic.

The club's ticket shop was also overwhelmed by the demand, and a club statement on the website read: "FC Augsburg will announce info on ticket sales separately. We ask you to abstain from requests in writing or over the phone."

Augsburg, whose WWK ARENA can hold just 26,160 for non-domestic games, were promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time in their history in 2011 and enjoyed their most impressive season to date in 2014-15.

Markus Weinzierl's men finished fifth during a season in which they lost 3-2 to Klopp's Borussia Dortmund in August before winning 1-0 at the Westfalenstadion in February.

They endured a highly disappointing start to the current campaign, winning just one of their opening 12 league games, but they have moved off the foot of the table with three wins and a draw in their last four matches.

In all competitions, they have won six and drawn two of their last 10 games, while goalkeeper Marwin Hitz's club record 361-minute run without conceding in the Bundesliga ended in Sunday's 2-1 victory over Schalke.
