Lokomotiv Moscow win Russian Cup, earn Europa League place

ASTRAKHAN, Russia -- Lokomotiv Moscow won the Russian Cup on Thursday, defeating Kuban Krasnodar 3-1 in extra time to lift their first trophy for eight years.

Kuban, which was bidding for the first major title in their history, took the lead in the 28th minute through Vladislav Ignatyev's goal, but a 73rd-minute equalizer from Baye Oumar Niasse took the game to extra time.

Lokomotiv seized control in the added half hour, with goals from Mbark Boussoufa and Aleksei Miranchuk securing the victory.

Igor Cherevchenko, who took charge of Lokomotiv on a temporary basis after Miodrag Bozovic resigned earlier this month, has guaranteed his side a Europa League place next season as a result of the win.
