Police in Rotterdam are tightening security and drafting in reinforcements, ahead of a highly-charged UEFA Europa League match between Feyenoord and AS Roma. (1:03)

NYON, Switzerland -- UEFA has charged Feyenoord with racist behaviour by fans who threw an inflatable banana on the pitch during a tense Europa League last-32 match against Roma.

UEFA said it also charged Roma winger Adem Ljajic with "provoking spectators" when celebrating the opening goal in Roma's decisive 2-1 win last Thursday.

Dozens of fans were detained in the Netherlands ahead of the return following disorder in Rome at the first-leg match.

Last Thursday, play was twice briefly stopped by fan incidents.

UEFA said Feyenoord face sanctions on March 19 for fans' racist behaviour, throwing fireworks and objects plus the club's "insufficient organization'' in the stadium.

UEFA's disciplinary panel meets Wednesday to hear cases against Ljajic and Roma, which was late for a kick off.

Feyenoord coach Fred Rutten said last week he did not believe racism was at play when the banana was thrown, saying, "There is such a fuss made about it. I don't see it that way. We have different nationalities in our team. It's nonsense. We make too much of it.''

Roma play Fiorentina in the last-16 round.
