Wolfsburg chief 'hurt' by Everton thrashing in Europa League

Wolfsburg sporting executive Klaus Allofs said his side let the Bundesliga down as they were defeated 4-1 at Everton in the Europa League.

German clubs had enjoyed the better of their meetings with their English counterparts in the Champions League, with two wins and a draw, but Everton recorded a comfortable victory at Goodison Park on Thursday.

"That was not us," Wolfsburg sporting executive Klaus Allofs told TV network Kabel 1 after the match. "That was not what you have to deliver when you take part in an international contest. It just wasn't enough in any of the key areas. It hurts me that we performed like that as a representative of Germany."

The match marked Wolfsburg's first European match since their elimination from the Champions League in December 2009, following their Bundesliga title success under Felix Magath.

"Seeing the ball hit the back of our net four times -- we'd pictured things a bit differently," midfielder Maxi Arnold said. "We made too many individual mistakes, and our opponents were cold as ice in punishing them."

Wolfsburg, who have invested heavily in the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Luiz Gustavo in recent times, have endured a difficult start to the season, taking only two points from their opening three Bundesliga games

On Sunday, they host league leaders Bayer Leverkusen, who are out to make amends for Tuesday's 1-0 Champions League defeat at AS Monaco.
