Real Madrid star Karim Benzema snubbed by France's Twitter account

The France national team's official Twitter account chose to snub Karim Benzema but congratulate Raphael Varane on reaching the Champions League final.

Benzema has not played for France since October 2015 after his alleged involvement in the attempted extortion of Mathieu Valbuena emerged during an ongoing police investigation.

Despite his international exile, Benzema has remained a central figure in Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane's plans, and starred as the reigning European champions clinched their place in the final berth at the expense of neighbours Atletico.

Following the game, Benzema's Madrid teammate and fellow France international Varane was congratulated by Les Bleus' official Twitter account, but the forward was not afforded the same courtesy.

After a fan criticised the failure to mention Benzema, calling the French Football Federation (FFF) "ridiculous," the administrator of the Twitter account retorted that "we only talk about the sports news of players who have been called up by the French national team in the last year."

Some fans pointed out the inconsistencies in the FFF's attitude, however, noting Alexandre Lacazette, whose last appearance for his country came just three days after Benzema's, had been congratulated for Lyon's Europa League win over Roma earlier this season.
