Intercontinental Cup could return - CONMEBOL chief Dominguez

CONMEBOL chief Alejandro Dominguez has said discussions are under way over reintroducing the Intercontinental Cup.

The Intercontinental Cup took place between 1960 and 2004 where the winners of the Champions League would face the victors of the Copa Libertadores, but it has since been replaced with an expanded FIFA Club World Cup.

Dominguez said talks were now being held over a venue for the match, which would not be taking place before August 2018, as well as potential sponsors.

"There is a verbal agreement and now we need to take it forward," Dominguez told a radio station in Paraguay.

"We are talking with UEFA about revamping the Intercontinental and a new cup that would be played between the winner of the Europa League and the winner of Conmebol's Sudamericana."

Reuters also reports that Dominguez said discussions are being held over an international fixture between the Copa America champions and the winners of the European Championship.
