Borussia Monchengladbach boss Andre Schubert targets Europa League

MONCHENGLADBACH -- Borussia Monchengladbach coach Andre Schubert has said he is focused on securing a place in the Europa League ahead of his side's Champions League clash with Manchester City.

The Bundesliga side must beat City on Wednesday to have any chance of reaching the knockout stage of the Champions League.

And Schubert, whose side missed out on the Europa League last season when they finished bottom of their group, said: "You must not forget that we are playing Manchester City -- one of the best teams who have the potential to get to the semifinal or the final.

"They have really good quality in the way they play and are an impressive team. We will be the outsiders.

"We always knew four out of the six matches would be hard and we're trying to win some for the Europa League -- and that is our aim, actually."

Schubert said Gladbach would "need to get to our limits" to have a chance against City after a run of only two wins in 10 games.

And he added that he was impressed with the impact being made by former Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola and had not been surprised when they beat Spanish champions Barcelona earlier this month.

"Manchester have really high pressing and have increased it to a really high level and they almost do that all match long," he said.

"This result [against Barcelona] was not so surprising for me. Pep has put his stamp on Manchester City already."

Borussia defender Andreas Christensen is expected to start against City despite suffering a torrid time in their first clash when Sergio Aguero scored a hat trick.

The Danish defender, on loan from Chelsea, has been linked with a permanent move to Gladbach but said he had not recently spoken to anyone at Stamford Bridge.

He said he was focused on helping the side end their run of poor form, adding: "We believe in ourselves and we know what we have to do and what we have to change. Obviously we'd like to have more points.

"I'm focusing on the game tomorrow and I'll be ready for that."
