Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo on UEFA 40-man Team of Year shortlist

UEFA named a 40-man list for the 2016 Team of the Year, encouraging fans to select their favourites online from a group that includes 12 Premier League nominees as well as La Liga stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Neymar and Andres Iniesta.

No Premier League players made the Team of the Year shortlist last season after just five were included among the original 40. This year's 40 are made up of four goalkeepers, 12 defenders, 12 midfielders and 12 forwards.

The 2016 list for fan voting features Joe Allen of Stoke City as well as players from Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Manchester United, Leicester City, West Ham and Manchester City.

Arsenal have the most included from any Premier League club, including defender Laurent Koscielny, midfielder Aaron Ramsey and forward Alexis Sanchez.

Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are the only two Manchester United players on the shortlist while Manchester City's featured players are Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero.

Real Madrid players Keylor Navas, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Dani Carvajal, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Gareth Bale and Ronaldo were all included.

Gerard Pique, Iniesta, Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez were named from Barcelona.

In terms of the 18 different nationalities represented, France and Spain both have five players nominated, while there are four from European champions Portugal.

No English players are among the 40 nominations for UEFA's Team of the Year poll, though three Welshman made the cut in Allen, Bale and Ramsey.
