Borussia Dortmund general manager: UCL final should stay in Europe

Borussia Dortmund general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke has hit out at suggestions that the Champions League final could one day be played outside Europe.

New UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said on Thursday that he would revive an open bidding process for the right to host the match, and is open to the idea of it being played in a location such as New York.

"I think it might be an idea in future but we have to speak about it," Ceferin said. "To go from Portugal to Azerbaijan, for example, is almost the same or the same as if you go to New York. Let's think about it."

But Watzke told German TV channel ZDF that the game should stay in Europe and added: "For us to go to the USA or Asia for friendly games is ok -- but you just try suggesting to the Americans that the Super Bowl should be staged in Frankfurt.

"He [Ceferin] should first get himself up to speed with UEFA's business.

"For such suggestions to come after just a few weeks [of Ceferin's presidency] makes me crazy."
