Robert Lewandowski benched by Bayern Munich against Benfica

Bayern Munich have surprisingly only named top scorer Robert Lewandowski on the bench for the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal at Benfica.

Lewandowski has scored 25 goals in 28 Bundesliga appearances so far this season, with another eight in nine Champions League matches.

Javi Martinez and Xabi Alonso are the two changes to the starting XI that faced Benfica in the first leg eight days ago, Lewandowski and Juan Bernat making way as coach Pep Guardiola shuffles his pack.

Bayern already knew they would be without a trio of defenders in Jerome Boateng, Holger Badstuber and Mehdi Benatia, as well as forward Arjen Robben.

Benfica will be without Jonas through suspension, while Nicolas Gaitan and Lisandro Lopez have failed to shake off knocks. Luisao only returning to the squad at the weekend following a spell out with a broken arm.

It means Eduardo Salvio and Raul Jimenez are drafted into the starting XI in place of Gaitan and Jonas from the first leg, while Lopez was only a sub in Munich. Kostas Mitroglou is also replaced, with Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez coming into the team.

Neither Gaitan, Mitroglou or Lopez make the bench.

Benfica: Ederson, Andre Almeida, Jardel, Lindelof, Eliseu, Fejsa, Renato Sanches, Salvio, Carcela, Pizzi, Raul Jimenez.

Bayern Munich: Neuer, Lahm, Alaba, Kimmich, Thiago, Ribery, Douglas Costa, Javi Martinez, Alonso, Vidal, Muller.
