PSG's Gregory van der Wiel 'disappointed' to miss Chelsea clash

Gregory van der Wiel says he does not feel "important" after being overlooked for Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League win over Chelsea last week.

The Dutch right-back, 28, had been hoping to benefit from Serge Aurier's suspension for criticising his manager Laurent Blanc and several teammates on social media.

Instead, Brazilian defender Marquinhos was drafted into the French champions' starting eleven for their 2-1 success in the first leg of their final 16 tie last Tuesday.

After scoring in PSG's 4-1 win over Reims in Ligue 1 on Saturday, Van der Wiel admitted that he had been expecting to play in the Champions League game.

"I'm disappointed but what can I do?" L'Equipe reported him as saying. "I can only be good like [on Saturday]. I did my job... I don't feel important.

"I play my games but I didn't play against Chelsea. At the moment, I no longer feel important."

Van der Wiel went on to express a sense of déjà vu after also being left out against Chelsea last season.

"I'm reliving the same situation," he said. "It's a big disappointment again. It's not easy. I want to become the number one [right-back] but I'm not. I'm trying to give my best."

The former Ajax player is out of contract at the end of the season but he says he hopes to extend his stay in the French capital.

"We'll see," he said. "My agent is talking about that with the club."

Meanwhile Aurier is set to have a hearing with PSG's directors on Monday as they contemplate what punishment the Ivory Coast international should face for his recent misdemeanour.
