Wolfsburg had 'been hoping' to draw Gent - director Klaus Allofs

Wolfsburg's director of sport Klaus Allofs admitted his side had got the Champions League draw they had been hoping for as they were paired with Belgian side Gent.

The Wolves, who eliminated Manchester United in the group stage, will fancy their chances of making the quarterfinals of European football's premier club competition after reaching the last 16 for the first time in their history.

"We had all a bit been hoping for Gent," Allofs told Sport1.de. "We can be quite happy.

"It's an interesting and doable draw. We know Belgian football quite well, although Gent is an unwritten page for us.

"Nevertheless, we have got to be well prepared."

Wolfsburg travel to nearby Belgium on Feb. 17 before hosting Gent at the VW-Arena on March 8.

Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking says there is no such thing as an easy draw.

"Gent came through a difficult group against Valencia and Olympique Lyon and, alongside us, they are one of the two surprise packages in the last 16," he told his club's website.

"We have a great deal of respect for our opponents.

"This stage of the Champions League is new to both sides, so I'm expecting it to be an interesting battle in which we are going to have to give it everything if we want to reach the next round."

Goalkeeper Diego Benaglio added: "This is a good draw, even if we're not going to take it lightly.

"Gent proved in the group stage what quality they have got and it is going to be up to us to play two good games because we definitely want to go through.

"It is certainly possible to go through."
