Man Utd's Wayne Rooney and Morgan Schneiderlin out for Wolfsburg clash

Manchester United will be without Wayne Rooney and Morgan Schneiderlin for their Champions League clash against Wolfsburg.

Rooney, who has made 499 appearances for United, came off with an ankle knock in the 1-1 draw with Leicester and will not feature in the game which the Red Devils must win to guarantee their place in the knockout rounds. If United draw with Wolfsburg, then they will be eliminated if PSV beat CSKA Moscow.

However, the side are also without Schneiderlin in midfield as the Frenchman picked up a minor knock to his hip in the 0-0 draw with West Ham this weekend.

Rooney, Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw will miss the trip, which means there is a place in the squad for youngsters Guillermo Varela, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Sean Goss, Nick Powell and Andreas Pereira.

Rooney missed the West Ham draw, with manager Louis van Gaal confirming last week that the striker was struggling.

"It's more heavy than we thought and a nasty injury," Van Gaal told MUTV. "When we go on it's been getting worse. We have to let him train to make the ankle stronger, that's very important. I cannot say [how long he's out for] because the doctor shall decide that with Wayne of course. He is training well in the rehabilitation."

The news means that United have just three players who could operate in a central striking role Memphis Depay, Marouane Fellaini and Anthony Martial, with Van Gaal previously insisting that Fellaini would not be used up front.
