Arsenal see Champions League draw with Bayern Munich as 'ominous'

Arsenal club secretary David Miles said he felt a chill when the Gunners were put into Bayern Munich's group in Thursday's Champions League draw.

Group F has a familiar look to it for Arsenal fans. Bayern ended their Champions League campaigns in the round of 16 in both 2013 and 2014, and the Gunners have now been drawn together with Olympiakos in the group stage for the fourth time in seven seasons.

Arsenal will begin the competition away to Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia.

Despite the tough challenges ahead, Miles said he had no complaints after the draw in Monaco.

"The draw started ominously when we were picked in Bayern's group but overall I think we can we relatively pleased with how it turned out," he said.

"Bayern have knocked us out twice so it is about time we returned the favour -- let's hope so anyway."

Aaron Ramsey hasn't forgotten Arsenal's past clashes with Bayern and Olympiakos, writing on Twitter:

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng also recalled defeating Arsenal in the past, and remembered fondly Bayern's victory in the 2013 final at Wembley.

"We can be satisfied with the draw, it could have been much worse," he said. "But those are still good names. The clashes with Arsenal have always been very interesting. And London has always brought us luck."

Bayern sporting executive Matthias Sammer also was pleased with the draw, but he warned that the games still have to be played and that no team will be a pushover.

"There is only truth in football, you have to focus on yourself," Sammer said. "We want to make it out of this group, and reach the knockout stages. We need good form, we need to be serious, and humble.

"We don't need to talk about Arsenal. Dinamo Zagreb remind me of BFC Dynamo [who won 10 consecutive East Germany titles before unification]. Dinamo have won the league in every year since 2006. And Olympiakos have also won many titles in Greece.

"Arsenal and Bayern are the favourites."

Phillipp Lahm said he was happy to play against Arsenal's German contingent.

"It's nice that we Arsenal and Per Mertesacker and Mesut Ozil, two old friends from the national team," Philipp Lahm said.

Lahm also said Bayern "are the favourites in this group," while goalkeeper Manuel Neuer said that "Bayern's goal has to be to win the group."

There have been questions marks over Olympiakos' participation, as UEFA only confirmed their inclusion on Monday after sport's highest court rejected an appeal by Greek rivals Panathinaikos.

Panathinaikos had challenged a UEFA appeals body decision in June to admit Olympiakos, whose owner Vangelis Marinakis was banned from football in June by a Greek magistrate.

He was released on bail as investigations continue into allegations that a criminal organisation is controlling the domestic game - but he was present at CL draw in Monaco. Marinakis refused to comment when asked about the allegations.

UEFA says neither the Greek FA "nor the criminal courts in Athens have rendered any final decision against Mr Marinakis or the club."
