Man Utd fall below Man City in UEFA coefficient ranking

Manchester United have dropped below their neighbours Manchester City in the UEFA ranking as they count the cost of their absence from Europe last season.

City have never reached the last eight of the Champions League but would be ranked 16th if the "live" coefficient score was used, whereas United are now 20th.

United were ranked 10th at the end of the 2014-15 season, which means they will be seeded in the Champions League playoff draw this month. It also means they are guaranteed to be in pot 2 for the group stage draw should they qualify.

They had stood sixth 12 months earlier and were top in 2009-10 as a result of their success under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The three-time European champions reached three Champions League finals between 2008 and 2011 but finished seventh in England in 2014, meaning they missed out on European qualification for the first time in a quarter of a century.

With the points they accrued for being runners-up in the 2010-11 Champions League no longer counting to their score, they will need to do well in Europe this season to avoid their final position slipping.

City were knocked out in the last 16 of the Champions League by Barcelona for a second successive year but have climbed in the overall standings.

While Barcelona were Champions League winners last year, Real Madrid continue to have the highest UEFA coefficient, with Luis Enrique's team dropping a place to third to rank below Bayern Munich.

Barcelona won the Champions League in 2010-11 but those points no longer count, whereas Bayern lost fewer points when results in 2010-11 were struck off.

The top five is completed by 2012 European champions Chelsea and 2014 finalists Atletico Madrid.

The UEFA coefficient is based on European results over the course of the five most recent seasons and, after the first rounds of Champions League and Europa League qualification were played, that now includes the 2015-16 campaign.

However, the "as it stands" score for all the top teams is at the moment purely an average awarded for the national association's coefficient ranking. And as the fifth, current season is not a complete season, the ranking is not considered official and isn't used for any ranking purpose throughout the 2015-16 season.
