Juventus' Buffon: 12-year wait makes semifinal berth even more special

The 12-year wait between Juventus semifinal berths gives the Old Lady extra reason to celebrate Wednesday's achievement, says legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

"I thought I'd have to wait less when I was at this stage 12 years ago, but seeing the journey was very difficult, we can enjoy this result even more.

"Of course, we know that we haven't achieved anything yet," said the longtime Juve keeper after his side's semi-clinching 0-0 draw at Monaco.

"We wanted to get through to the next round at all costs. We knew it was a great opportunity and after 12 years we wanted to honour the history of Juve.

"There was a lot more tension here than in Dortmund, as we knew Monaco were much more complicated to face and we had a slender lead, so every tiny error could cost double.

"I think the tension therefore gripped us more than usual."

Coach Massimiliano Allegri echoed his goalkeeper's sentiments and hailed the resolve his side showed on a nervy night at the Stade Louis II which saw little in the form of pleasing play from the Italian side.

"Tonight the objective was to reach the semifinal. We might not have played very attractive football, but it's difficult to take on Monaco and we made many technical errors," the Juve boss said.

"I think it was a good performance defensively, as we allowed little or nothing to Monaco. At the end of the day, the result counts for more than the performance tonight," he continued.

With the vital result, Juventus join fellow heavyweights Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the last four of Europe's top club competition.

"I am pleased for the lads, as I think they deserved this semifinal for all they've done in the Champions League. We only lost twice by 1-0, undeservedly in my view, and we always did well in the other games.

"These are the three biggest clubs in Europe," said Allegri. "I can certainly guarantee it will be a completely different game against these sides than with Monaco."
