PSG confident ahead of Barcelona tie following display vs. Chelsea

Paris Saint-Germain pointed to their exploits in knocking out Chelsea to boost hopes of Champions League progress after being drawn against Barcelona in the quarterfinals.

The French champions met Barca in this season's group stage, winning 3-2 at home before losing 3-1 away to finish as runners-up to the Catalan club in Group F.

Defeat in the Camp Nou led to them facing Chelsea in the round of 16, but Laurent Blanc's men defied the odds to progress to the last eight despite playing with 10 men for nearly 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge following Zlatan Ibrahimovic's first-half red card.

Ex-Barca striker Ibrahimovic will miss the first leg of the tie against his former club through suspension, while midfielder Marco Verratti will also serve a ban.

However, PSG's deputy sporting director Olivier Letang told reporters that the side's display in West London showed they are capable of eliminating Luis Enrique's men.

"We know they are a very strong team, but we have shown our qualities," Letang, whose club succumbed to Barca on away goals in the 2012-13 quarterfinals, said. "It's a disadvantage to play the first game at the Parc des Princes, but it's up to us to be ready in a month's time. What we did at Chelsea was a great achievement. But that's in the past, and we want to go further."

Barca coach Luis Enrique has also acknowledged that PSG are a threat following their display at Stamford Bridge.

"We are talking about a very dangerous opponent, for whom we have a lot of respect," he told Barca's official website. "We have the experience of the group stages, with one defeat and one victory. And after knocking out Chelsea they have shown their credentials to be a strong candidate for the competition."

Barca vice-president Jordi Mestre, meanwhile, has said the club are "happy" with the draw and "favourites" to progress to the semifinals.

Mestre told Canal Plus at Friday's draw that on paper his team had an advantage, although he added PSG were a great team who had spent well in recent years.

"We are happy with the draw," Mestre said. "We must say we are favourites against PSG. We know them well, have played them a few times -- we lost there in the group and won at home. They are a great team, have strengthened well, and we will have to battle."

Mestre feels Ibrahimovic and Verratti's suspensions, as well as Barca having the second leg at home, could prove to be potential advantages for the club.

"In theory it is a benefit as they are two very important players who can make the difference," said Mestre, whose club will be without the suspended Dani Alves for the first leg. "And so is playing the second leg at home, depending on the first game. But having our fans supporting us will make it not more easy, but it will help us a lot."

Luis Enrique added: "Although they are important players, for sure they will be replaced by very good players, who will be just as dangerous. Playing the return at home is not a big deal. It is important to get a good result in the first game, and then try and qualify for the semifinals in front of our own fans."

Avoiding La Liga rivals Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid -- who will meet each other -- in the draw was another bonus, Mestre said.

"In the quarterfinals, teams are here as they are powerful," he said. "If we had drawn Atletico or Madrid, well we play them all the time, so we prefer other teams. PSG are very strong, it will be difficult for us."

While a win in Sunday's La Liga Clasico at home to Real would be a boost for Barca ahead of the tie, Mestre accepts the quarterfinal first leg on April 15 is still a while away.

"No doubt that if we win on Sunday, the team will be boosted a lot," he said. "But there is a month until the first leg -- that is an eternity in football. But no doubt we will be strengthened if we win on Sunday."

Asked whether the troubles Barca experienced earlier in the season had subsided for the moment, Mestre said the most important thing was that the team is currently playing well.

"The institution is good, everyone sees how the team is playing," Mestre said. "We are in very, very good form, with a good attitude and style of play. We must continue like this, or even look to improve. I agree with Luis Enrique when he says the most important thing is to just focus on the next game."
