Diego Simeone praises Atletico's persistence after 5-goal second half

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone praised his team's persistence after they broke through after a scoreless first half to beat Malmo 5-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Spanish champions could not find the net before the break, though Antoine Griezmann hit the woodwork.

The floodgates opened only three minute into the second half when Koke scored, then Mario Mandzukic, Griezmann, Diego Godin and Allessio Cerci all followed.

"We continued to push. In the first half it was obvious we were close to a goal," Simeone said. "We had some good chances. In the second half we improved our precision over the final yards.

"Griezmann was anxious in front of goal. What I liked was his work, his involvement and him getting between the lines.

"He had a very good game, as did Mario Mandzukic. We talked at half time and I told him he was having a fantastic game and it would end in a goal."

Griezmann said he was desperate to score a goal after Malmo did well to cut out Atletico's crosses in the first half..

"Actually, I needed a game like that and a goal," he said. "It's a shame about the shot in the first half that hit the bar but we've achieved an important victory, we have six points and we have to keep improving.

"At first we played pretty football and we put in crosses. In the second half we started combining more and we were able to get through the defence."

Simeone also said praised the work of Cerci, who scored his first goal for Atletico on Wednesday.

"Cerci is a striker but we can use him as the point of the attack. He finds space and creates danger there. He will be very important," Simeone said.
