Jerome Boateng haunts Manchester City as Bayern Munich leave it late

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng broke Manchester City hearts at the death as a superb late strike put his former club to the sword in dramatic fashion at the Alllianz Arena.

- Tuesday: Dortmund destroy Arsenal

- Three Points: Chelsea-Schalke

City had beaten Bayern away from home last season in their final group game and they looked to have denied the Bavarians again with a pragmatic display that frustrated Pep Guardiola's side.

Bayern had the better of the chances but found Joe Hart in good form, the England goalkeeper saving from Mario Gotze, Thomas Muller, Rafinha, Boateng and David Alaba. City had a couple of chances of their own, as Bacary Sagna and David Silva failed to convert headed opportunities.

But it was a familiar face who popped up in the 90th minute, Boateng smashing home a shot from the edge of the box to hand Bayern what may prove to be a vital 1-0 win in Group E.

Elsewhere in the group, Roma recorded their biggest ever Champions League win with a 5-1 drubbing of CSKA Moscow.

Goals from Juan Manuel Iturbe, Gervinho (2) and Maicon saw the Gialllorossi race into a 4-0 halftime lead before an own goal from Sergey Ignashevich piled further misery on the Russian side, who bagged a late consolation through Ahmed Musa but look in danger of being Group E whipping boys.

Schalke claimed an impressive point at Chelsea, as Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's neat second-half finish equalised Cesc Fabregas' opener to secure a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Their tie was matched by Sporting Lisbon and NK Maribor, who shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw in Slovenia. On-loan Manchester United winger Nani celebrated his return to Champions League action with the first goal but Luka Zahovic snatched a point in the 92nd minute.

Barcelona fielded eight academy graduates in their starting lineup as a young side crept past Cypriot minnows APOEL with a 1-0 win.

The Catalans dominated possession without really punishing APOEL; in the end it was an unlikely source in Gerard Pique who proved their match-winner with a first-half header from Lionel Messi's free kick.

The victory saw Barca take pole position in Group F as Ajax battled back from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Paris Saint-German in Amsterdam. Edinson Cavani struck first for the visitors on 14 minutes but Lasse Schöne grabbed an equaliser after the break with a fine free kick.

BATE Borisov suffered a humiliation at the hands of 2004 winners FC Porto, who helped themselves to a 6-0 victory at the Estadio Dragao.

Inspired by Yacine Brahimi, who netted a hat trick, Julen Lopetegui's side crushed their Belarusian opponents -- Jackson Martinez, Adrian and Vincent Aboubacar also getting on the scoresheet as Porto rose to the summit of Group H.

In joint-second place behind Porto are Athletic Bilbao and Shakhtar Donetsk, who played out a goalless draw at San Mames.
