Galatasaray claim Turkish Super Lig title after Fenerbahce draw

Galatasaray were crowned Turkish Super Lig champions as Fenerbahce were held to a 2-2 draw at Istanbul Buyuksehir on Monday.

Galatasaray's 2-0 win over Besiktas 24 hours earlier meant Fenerbahce needed victory to ensure the title race went to the final day of the season, but the writing was on the wall for the defending champions when two goals in nine second-half minutes from Mehmet Batdal put Buyuksehir in control and Fener finished the game with just seven players.

Late strikes from Diego and Pierre Webo either side of Mehmet Topuz's dismissal gave Fener hope but that soon evaporated when Bruno Alves conceded a penalty and was sent off and Caner Erkin followed him down the tunnel for his protests.

Batdal missed the subsequent spot-kick but Fener's chances of grabbing a last-gasp winner were ended when Webo also saw red in an incident-packed conclusion to the match.

Galatasaray were left to celebrate their record 20th league title and their third in four seasons.
