An arrest warrant has been issued for former Turkey striker Hakan Sukur as authorities investigate the failed coup that attempted to depose President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in July. A report from Turkey's Anadolu news agency claimed prosecutors were accusing Sukur of "being a member of an armed terror group," AFP said. That referred to what the government calls the Fethullah Terror Organisation run by Fethullah Gulen, a U.S.-based preacher accused of being behind the attempted coup. Police were reported to have searched a property in Istanbul believed to belong to ex-Galatasaray star Sukur, whose father Selmet is also the subject of an arrest warrant. Sukur is reported to be in the U.S. after leaving Turkey last year. Turkish media reports said an Interpol Red Notice would be requested for his extradition. He moved into politics after ending his football career. In 2011, he was elected as an MP for Erdogan's Justice and Development party but resigned after a 2013 corruption investigation into the prime minister and his allies and backed Gulen. Earlier this year, Sukur was accused of having insulted Erdogan on Twitter, but denied that his tweets had targeted the president.
