Hoffenheim boss Huub Stevens resigns due to health reasons

Huub Stevens has vacated his place in the Hoffenheim dug-out for health reasons, German news wire SID report.

Stevens, 62, resigned early on Wednesday amid a major sporting crisis which has left Hoffenheim seven points adrift of the spots above the relegation line.

Stevens was appointed as the Hoffenheim coach in late October 2015, but in 10 games he was not able to turn the club's fortunes around as the Kraichgauer picked up only one win -- a 1-0 against bottom club Hannover 96, whom they currently lead on goal difference.

At the weekend, Hoffenheim suffered a 2-0 home defeat against Darmstadt 98, but the club backed Stevens to remain in the dug-out.

"It's no alternative to just close the shop," the club's sporting director Alexander Rosen said. "And a change at the coaching position is also not alternative."

According to SID, Alfred Schreuder and Armin Reutershahn, who worked as Stevens' assistants, will coach the club until the end of the season.
