Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld is fully fit - Belgium's Roberto Martinez

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has been declared fully fit by Belgium coach Roberto Martinez despite Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino's recent reluctance to select him.

Alderweireld has not played for Spurs since the FA Cup tie at Rochdale almost a month ago, but has been included in the Belgium squad for next Tuesday's friendly against Saudi Arabia.

"Toby Alderweireld is completely fit after a difficult rehabilitation. As far as I'm concerned, he is ready to play," Martinez told Belgium newspaper DH on Monday.

Alderweireld was sidelined for nearly three months after suffering a hamstring injury in November's Champions League game against Real Madrid but has said since late January that he is fully fit.

Pochettino, however, left him out of matches against Liverpool, Arsenal and Juventus last month, and the 29-year-old's only appearances since the injury have come in cup games against Newport County and Rochdale.

"The player always feels they are fit to play but it is our responsibility together -- the medical and fitness area -- to take the best decision. We cannot put his career at risk," Pochettino said last month.

Alderweireld suffered another hamstring injury at the end of last month. He has returned to full training again but he was an unused substitute in Saturday's 3-0 win at Swansea in the FA Cup quarterfinals.

Spurs have been trying to tie Alderweireld to a new contract for more than a year but an agreement now seems unlikely after talks broke down in January, a source close to the situation told ESPN FC.

Alderweireld's current deal, worth £50,000 a week, is due to expire in 2019 and reports suggest he would like a long-term contract worth closer to £150,000-per-week.

Spurs can trigger an option to extend the contract until 2020 but that would activate a buyout clause allowing him to leave if a £25 million bid comes in before the final two weeks of the summer 2019 window.

The source said Spurs would consider selling Alderweireld in the summer.
