Harry Kane delighted with Cristiano Ronaldo shirt swap after Madrid draw

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane said he had swapped shirts with "role model" Cristiano Ronaldo after the 1-1 Champions League draw at Real Madrid on Tuesday.

The game at the Bernabeu was billed by some as a showdown between Kane and Ronaldo, two of the top scorers in Europe this calendar year.

Kane was influential in Tottenham's opener, pressurising Raphael Varane into an own goal, while Ronaldo equalised from the penalty spot.

The Spurs striker, who has previously said he wants to emulate four-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo, was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail: "I asked for his shirt.

"He's a big role model of mine, watching him when I was growing up. It's a nice shirt to get and frame.

"I gave him my shirt -- I don't know what he'll do with it. We just said: 'See you in a couple of weeks.'"

Spurs and Real, locked on seven points with identical records at the top of Group H, meet again at Wembley later this month, and Kane said their performance in Madrid had been "a great night for us."

He added: "We can be proud of it, the fans can be proud and the whole club can be proud.

"It was a big statement. A few years ago we were playing in the Europa League, and to come here to the Bernabeu and put in a performance like that -- we drew and maybe could have won -- shows what kind of team we are.

"It will give us confidence for the Premier League. We've shown we can do it against the best team in the world. It's a good incentive for us.

"Everyone put in an amazing shift. For the majority of the game we matched them.

"We wanted to prove to everyone we are a very good team, and we want to take that on for the rest of the season. We have to keep improving."

Midfielder Harry Winks, who held his own against former Spurs player Luka Modric in midfield, said he used to watch the Croatia international in action at White Hart Lane.

"When I was coming through the academy at a young age he was someone I always used to watch," the 21-year-old said.

"I still admire him to this day -- he's a fantastic, world-class player. To play against him was special.

"Him and Toni Kroos, they are two fantastic, world-class players, players I look up to, so when you go on the pitch with them it's easy to get a little bit daunted by it.

"But I try to take all that away from it, treat it like any normal game and just go for them as I would any other player."
