Tottenham Hotspur waiting on Kieran Trippier ankle injury news

LONDON -- Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier will undergo further assessment on Monday to determine the extent of an ankle injury suffered in Saturday's friendly win over Juventus.

Trippier is Spurs' only senior right-back after Kyle Walker was sold to Manchester City but is a major doubt for the Premier League opener at Newcastle on Sunday.

The 26-year-old left Wembley on crutches, wearing a protective boot on his right foot, and will undergo further tests including a scan if the swelling has died down sufficiently.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said: "He twisted his ankle. We need to assess him on Monday and then we will see.

"Now the feeling is good. It's true that he has crutches, but it's good. We hope that it is not a big issue."

Pochettino has said Kyle Walker-Peters, the 20-year-old who won the Under-20 World Cup with England in June, is not yet ready to play in the Premier League, meaning Eric Dier or Moussa Sissoko could play on the right side of defence if Trippier does not recover.

Spurs are expected to provide an update on Monday or Tuesday, but it is club policy not to put a timeframe on injuries.

Ben Davies, likely to be Spurs' only fit senior full-back at St. James' Park, has an opportunity to make the left-back spot his own while Danny Rose recovers from knee surgery.

"It's going to be an opportunity for me to get some games and it's all about trying to do well in those games, then we will see what happens," he said.

Davies added that both he and Trippier have had to be patient since joining Spurs, saying: "We're definitely quite similar.

"We've been in and out of the team the time we've been here, but in any club you're going to have the rotation system with the amount of games you have.

"But when you get that jersey you've got to try to make the best of the opportunity."

Meanwhile, Toby Alderweireld has said Spurs can improve on last season despite being the only Premier League club yet to make a summer signing.

Asked about the lack of transfer activity, he said: "First of all, it's not up to me. Second of all, it's more important to keep this team together.

"We have a good team, we're happy, and I think we can do even better than last year. We're trying to develop ourselves as players and as a team. The rest is up to the boss."
