Tottenham's Harry Winks sidelined for rest of the campaign with ankle injury

LONDON -- Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks has been ruled out for the rest of the season with ankle ligament damage.

Winks, 21, was stretchered off during Tottenham's 2-0 win at Burnley on Saturday after landing awkwardly on his ankle.

The midfielder underwent a scan on the injury and Tottenham confirmed on Tuesday that he will now not play again this season.

The news comes after Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino had earlier backed Winks to recover from injury to become one of England's best midfielders.

"He was playing well and I'm sure in time would have been considered by [England manager] Gareth Southgate -- that's a question for him," Pochettino told a news conference of Winks, who made his debut for England under-21s last month.

"He is a very good prospect, a player who is dynamic and aggressive. He needs time to be consistent but in time he can be one of the best midfielders for England."

On Wednesday, Tom Carroll -- the player who effectively made way for Winks -- will face boyhood club Tottenham for the first time since leaving for Swansea.

Carroll made over 50 appearances for Spurs after making his debut five years ago, but he also had five different loan spells before joining Swansea permanently in January in a deal worth around £4.5 million.

"Every player is different and he wanted to play more, he needed to feel important and I think Swansea promised and provided that a lot," Pochettino said.

"It was his decision with our decision. He was a very good professional, a very good player with us but we couldn't promise he would play every game. For him it was the right time to move.

"It's very clear he was a player with a lot of quality in the Premier League and he's fit in easily there and is very consistent. We are happy for him because he is a very nice guy."

Pochettino will assess Victor Wanyama on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday's match at the Liberty Stadium after he was replaced with a back problem against Burnley. Eric Dier is on standby to move from defence into midfield if Wanyama is not fit.
