Tottenham have until end of March to make Wembley decision - source

Tottenham Hotspur have until the end of March to tell the Football Association (FA) if they intend to play Premier League football at Wembley Stadium next season, a source close to the governing body has told ESPN FC.

In May, the club announced a deal to use Wembley for this season's European fixtures, which included the option to play all home Premier League and cup matches at the national stadium for the 2017-18 season while White Hart Lane is demolished and their new stadium is finished on a site adjacent to the old ground.

However, last month sources told ESPN FC that Spurs are yet to activate the option, and it has now emerged that the club has a little over two months to do so.

The Premier League sets no formal deadline for clubs to confirm the venue for home fixtures. A Spurs source said they are relaxed about the deadline and expect to play at the 90,000-capacity stadium next season. However, the FA is eager to begin preparing Wembley for Premier League football as soon as possible.

Spurs insist their new £750 million new stadium, due to be ready for the start of the 2018-19 season, is on schedule but, given the complexity of the project, feel it would be rash to commit to plans for next season before it is absolutely necessary.

Other elements of the new stadium project, including the redevelopment of White Hart Lane Station, are behind schedule but Spurs say these will not have an impact on the opening date of the ground.

There has been a notable lack of fanfare around the club's last season at White Hart Lane. Spurs, however, do not believe they are leaving their home, merely redeveloping it, and will therefore confine celebrations to the final home match against Manchester United on May 13.

Spurs plan to unveil the latest images of the new stadium project on Friday.
