Tottenham and Harry Kane shelve contract talks for later date - sources

Tottenham Hotspur and Harry Kane have put contract talks on hold as both parties are well apart on agreeing terms over a new deal, sources close to the player have told ESPN FC.

Tottenham have tied down a number of their top players to new long-term contracts in recent weeks, including Eric Dier, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli, as Mauricio Pochettino looks to secure the futures of key members of his squad.

Talks over fresh terms for Kane have been going on for several months, but sources have told ESPN FC that neither party are anywhere close to reaching an agreement over the striker's future and they have now decided to put discussions on the backburner.

Kane believes any new deal should reflect his importance to the team with the 23-year-old firmly established as one the best strikers in Europe after finishing as top goal scorer in the Premier League last season.

Kane's current deal at While Hart Lane, which runs until 2020, sees him earning less than some of his rivals in the England squad and Premier League due to Tottenham's wage structure.

Despite Kane's importance to Spurs, they are reluctant to move the forward among the ranks of the club's highest earners, with several current first-team members earning more than the England international.

A number of clubs are monitoring Kane's contract situation, but Tottenham remain hopeful of reaching a compromise with the player as he is happy at White Hart Lane and talks are expected to resume in the New Year.
