Tottenham's head of recruitment Paul Mitchell to step down

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that head of recruitment Paul Mitchell is to leave the club after resigning.

In a statement, Spurs said Mitchell, who has a contract until November 2017, will depart at "a future date to be mutually agreed."

Mitchell, who played for MK Dons and Wigan, worked with Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton and followed the Argentine to White Hart Lane in November 2014.

He was influential in bringing the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Kevin Wimmer, Kieran Trippier, Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen to Tottenham, although Spurs' interest in Dele Alli and Eric Dier predates his arrival.

The Telegraph reported that Mitchell clashed with Daniel Levy, but the Spurs chairman paid tribute to the 34-year-old and hinted that he would continue in his role until at least the end of the summer transfer window.

"Mitch has been with us for two years and created a well-staffed department and run our recruitment processes for the past two years," Levy said. "We understand and respect his wish to consider new avenues. The priority right now is the final few weeks of the transfer window.

"I know that, whilst most of our business has been completed, Mitch is keen to ensure we start the season in the best position."

Mitchell, who has already been linked to Leicester, said: "I've greatly enjoyed my time at Tottenham and it'll continue to be my sole focus until such time as I move on to new challenges."
