Ruud van Nistelrooy told me to join Tottenham - Vincent Janssen

Tottenham Hotspur striker Vincent Janssen has revealed that former Manchester United and Netherlands forward Ruud van Nistelrooy advised him to make the move to Spurs.

Janssen, 22, completed his protracted transfer from AZ Alkmaar to Tottenham on July 12 for a reported fee of £17 million.

And the striker, who made his Netherlands debut last season, says that it was a conversation with his compatriot and former United centre-forward Van Nistelrooy that convinced him to move to White Hart Lane.

"I talked to Ruud," Janssen said in quotes reported by the Mirror. "I want to keep everything he said between him and me because it was a big private talk.

"But I tell you one thing: he thinks Spurs are a fantastic club and just right for me."

Janssen had been at AZ for just one year after a £400,000 move from Almere in 2015, but his 27 goals saw him top the Eredivisie goal scoring charts in the 2015-16 season, attracting attention from bigger clubs in the Netherlands and across Europe.

AZ initially stalled transfer negotiations, forcing the player to attempt to push through a move himself, but Janssen understands why his former club held out for the best possible price.

"AZ refused to even name a fee and I found that very irritating," Janssen added. "Sometimes you have to show your teeth, so I can't be blamed for sticking up for my case.

"AZ went for the highest bidder. A year ago, I was worth only £400,000 and now I have been sold for 40 times that amount.

"But this is the football world. I can see the next player going for more than the £100m that is going round as the fee for Paul Pogba.

"But I am still the same guy as last year. I am just Vincent and I just accept everything that is happening in the football world around me."

Janssen started in the defeats to Juventus and Atletico Madrid on Spurs' recent tour of Australia, but isn't worried about the prospect of being behind first-choice forward Harry Kane in the pecking order once the full season gets underway.

"I think I will get plenty of playing time at Spurs," he said. "We are going to play at least 60 games this season and that's why the club needed an extra striker."
