Kevin Wimmer signs new five-year contract at Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer has signed a contract that runs until 2021, the Premier League club have announced.

Austria international Wimmer, 23, signed for Tottenham from Cologne last summer for an undisclosed fee.

The centre-back went on to make nine Premier League starts in his debut season for Spurs, filling in for the injured Jan Vertonghen.

Wimmer helped the club finish third in the table under head coach Mauricio Pochettino, securing Champions League football for 2016-17.

Wimmer told Spurs TV: "I'm very delighted of course to sign the contract and stay with the club for five more years. It's a big pleasure for me and I'm very happy to stay with this club."

Pochettino added: "It's important that he's very young and his first season with us was good. All of the squad needs to be ready to take their opportunity and this is what he showed.

"He competed well and I think it was great for him."
