Tottenham to clock up most miles of any Premier League club in preseason

Tottenham will travel further than any other Premier League club during preseason, according to data compiled by the BBC.

Spurs will clock up 22,468 miles, including a trip to Australia -- significantly further than their closest challenger Chelsea, with 14,345 miles.

In total, Premier League clubs will travel an estimated 168,333 miles for preseason friendlies and tours, with Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, West Ham and champions Leicester City all travelling approximately 12,000 miles.

Spurs face Juventus and Atletico Madrid in the International Champions Cup in Melbourne on July 26 and 29 respectively, before visiting Oslo for a friendly with Inter Milan on Aug. 5.

It is the second consecutive summer that the North London club have visited Australia after they travelled to Sydney, via Malaysia, for a post-season match against Sydney FC in May 2015.

Watford, the only Premier League club not leaving England during preseason, will travel just 112 miles.

Premier League clubs visit 14 countries, with the United States the most popular destination with 17 matches this summer. Austria is second with nine games.

"What we've seen in the past 10 years is big clubs going further and further afield," Rob Wilson, a football finance expert from Sheffield Hallam University, told the BBC.

"They are looking to leverage new markets, like China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. Australia is not doing too bad.

"Preseason can be hugely lucrative. A club does a tour, they sell more products, there's more branding and more sponsors start to get involved."
